Curated by Jessica O’Donnell, Head of Collections
In an exciting new development, an innovative new series of spotlight exhibitions from the permanent collection at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane is taking place during 2009 and 2010.
Entitled The Collection Revealed, the second of these ‘vignette’ exhibitions is Cubism: Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone and May Guinness and follows the huge success of our first vignette exhibition on the Irish landscape artist Nathaniel Hone (1831-1917).
Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone and May Guinness were at the vanguard of Modernism in Ireland and their work is shown alongside that of Albert Gleizes and Andre Lhote, both influential exponents of Cubism in France and with whom they studied in Paris.
The Gallery is extremely fortunate to have several examples of work by ground-breaking artists and it is hoped that The Collection Revealed will further encourage appreciation of, and participation in, modern and contemporary art as well as revealing many hidden gems from the Collection.
An innovative aspect of The Collection Revealed is how it strategically dovetails with the gallery’s education, publications and conservation programme thus ensuring the long term care of the collection and the provision of a platform for fascinating new insights into art history, artists techniques and practice which may come to light.
