Hugh Lane Gallery - Transition Year Programme
Just Like Teen Vision
On view until 30 April 2020
Gallery 8- Ground Floor
Founded in 1908, the Hugh Lane Gallery is regarded as one of the first modern art galleries in the world. Founded by Hugh Lane, a Cork-born art dealer and collector together with Dublin Corporation and a varied and distinguished body of supporters, the Gallery’s collection of Irish and international art also includes stained glass by Harry Clarke and the renowned studio of Francis Bacon. In addition there are dynamic programmes of temporary exhibitions and education as well as a conservation programme.
Just Like Teen Vision is a display of decorative vessels and a number of collaborative prints made during our TY programme which took place from Tuesday 28 January – Friday 31 January 2020. The display also includes a short film featuring responses to artworks from the collection chosen by the participating 15 students. Each student explored artworks from the collection that personally inspired them to create their own vessels and collaborative prints arising from their close looking. During this TY course, the students gained an insight into the operations of the gallery through talks with gallery curators exploring our exhibitions, education, collections and conservation programmes. Taking place in our dedicated Education studio space and throughout the Gallery, the students were encouraged to discover more about art and their own creative potential through discussions on art and philosophy, talks on selected artworks, story collage and Visual Thinking Strategies, as well as the reflective potential of sketchbooks.
With a maximum of two students per school, the course offered the opportunity for students to meet others from their peer group and we commend Beatrice, Evan, Jack, Aoife, Sive, Isabelle, Alex, Eilish, Anthone, Kacper, Mia, Sofia, Anastazija, Glory and Cillian for their creativity and committed engagement during this course.
We are very grateful to Jane Fogarty for being the students’ overarching liaison artist and for her assistance with the display of the students’ work; and to Ashleigh Downey, Beth O’Halloran, Kimberly Griffith, Jessica Fahy, Aoife Convery, Síle McNulty-Goodwin, Michael Dempsey, Logan Sisley, Federica Traversa, Isabel Cabezas and Cleo Fagan for their valued contributions to the programme; to the art handling team; and to Liliane Puthod and Jane Fogarty for the film's production. The TY programme was curated by Jessica O'Donnell, Head of Education and Community Outreach at the Hugh Lane Gallery.
