Screening of Mike Crane and Lee Welch's film piece titled Assembly Room 1 followed by Q&A.
Assembly Room 1 is a filmed adaptation of a live performance scripted by Mike Crane and Lee Welch.
The performance was filmed in an abandoned office space that formerly housed a job placement program located in midtown Manhattan. While using the scenario of a jury deliberation as a formal and conceptual parameter, the video depicts five participants engaging in a conversation regarding a collection of artifacts whose relevance to a particular event remains unclear. As we see and hear these individuals arguing over the merits of language, memory and the use value of objects, it becomes increasingly clear that the reasoning leading up to their deliberation has grown entirely subsumed by each member’s sole interpretation of the situation at hand.
