John Lavery’s Portraits of 1921 Treaty Signatories on Exhibition in London.

Hugh Lane Gallery’s collection of portraits by Sir John Lavery of the British and Irish signatories of the Anglo-Irish Treaty are on view at the Embassy of Ireland, London, in autumn 2021.

The Art of Negotiation: John Lavery's Anglo Irish Treaty Portraits presents fourteen paintings by the renowned painter Sir John Lavery. He and his wife Hazel opened their London home to the delegates during the Treaty negotiations in 1921. John produced portraits of the nine principal negotiators from both sides, which he gave to the Gallery in 1935 in Hazel’s memory.

The exhibition includes major Irish and British political figures who were involved in the negotiations, such as Michael Collins, Winston Churchill, Arthur Griffith and David Lloyd George, as well as other key figures from the time such as Eamon De Valera and Lady Lavery.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Embassy of Ireland and Hugh Lane Gallery. Two works have been generously lent by the National Gallery of Ireland and Áras an Uachtaráin.

The Art of Negotiation launched on 7 October and continues until 7 November. It is part of the Embassy of Ireland’s programme marking the centenary of the negotiation and signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 – a key moment in Irish and British history.
