Condition Checking Michael Kane Prints

In this video, Michael Kane’s Agamemnon Felled Series of 20 framed woodcuts are being condition checked before transit to storage.

A purpose-built box was constructed by our technicians and the works separated into pairs using archival foamboard to prevent frame damage.  These dividers are clearly labelled with all the registration numbers to help with location checks and work retrieval as they minimise the need to rifle through frames to locate a work.  The storage box has ventilation holes in its lid to naturally allow airflow and prevent any microclimate from developing.

Inside the box lid is a list of works with thumbnail images for future reference and each work is checked off against this before the glazing is given a light clean [using deionized water] and a new Hugh Lane Gallery frame label applied. We cut a very basic board template to ensure the labels were consistently located. Each work is marked present and any damage recorded before being returned to the box.
