Facing Oliver Hall's 'Road Over the Westmoreland Moors'

Conservators often carry out ‘facing’, a technique whereby tissue paper is applied to the face of the painting using a weak adhesive. This technique can be useful as a method for introducing adhesive into and consolidating cracking in the paint layer, as well as for providing support for larger areas of cracking while the painting is handled. This facing can then easily be removed as required using water. In this video, paintings conservator Reuben Ruxton is facing Oliver Hall’s (1869 – 1957) Road Over the Westmoreland Moors using Japanese tissue and dilute adhesive.
