2023 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the towering figures of Irish music, Edward Bunting. This concert celebrates his music, life and legacy. Music and songs from Bunting’s three collections of Irish music will be interwoven with extracts from his personal letters.

Edward Bunting was born in Armagh in 1773, He was a musical prodigy, a celebrated pianist, organist, conductor, music teacher and organiser of the Belfast Music Festival in 1813 at which Handel’s Messiah was first performed in Belfast. Bunting was also a founding member of two Irish harp societies in Belfast in 1808 and 1819, a collector, primarily of the music of the harpers, but also music of pipers, fiddlers and singers, and the author of three seminal collections of Irish music. The breadth and intensity of Bunting’s activities is extraordinary.
