Richard Gorman: Living Through Paint(ing)

Hugh Lane Gallery is delighted to present a survey exhibition by Richard Gorman in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Museum of Villa Croce, and Oriental Art Museum E. Chiossone, Genoa, Italy.

The work of Richard Gorman follows his very personal insights and intentions in the manipulation of colours, forms and metaphors on the flat plane of a canvas. Every time we look at a Richard Gorman painting, one can ask what is it and what does it mean? His sensuous paintings and off beat shapes appear mobile – as if floating past, ascending and colliding with one another. His use of handmade rice paper for printing comes from his time spent I Japan which greatly influenced his thinking.

Viewing a Richard Gorman painting is to be in front of a theatrical setting where the geometrical elements interact with the canvas or paper surface. It is possible to affirm that his work is a spatial art made up of fragmented and overlapped outlines ” – Valeria Ceregini

The exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour publication with an essay by Roy Foster.

The exhibition opens in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square, Dublin on 9^th March 2023 and will run until 20th August 2023.

Profile

Born in Dublin in 1946, Richard Gorman was educated in Ireland but has divided his time between Dublin and Milan since the 1980s. He has exhibited widely and regularly since the mid-80s, especially in Dublin, London, Milan and Tokyo. His solo exhibitions have included shows at Chigasaki Museum, Japan (2019); Limerick City Gallery of Art, Ireland (2017) Gallery Ihn, Seoul (2004); Galerie der Spiegel, Cologne (2003); Mitaka City Art Foundation, Tokyo (1999) and Itami City Museum of Art, Osaka (1998). Gorman has also participated in group shows, including at the Royal Hibernian Academy (2022) and National Gallery of Ireland (2021). He has received many awards, most notably the Palette d’Or at the 1986 Festival International de Peinture, Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, the Open Award at the EV+A, Limerick in 1987 and the Pollock/Krasner Award in 1996. Gorman is a member of Aosdána and in 2005 he was elected RHA at the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work features in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Civic Offices Dublin; Ulster Museum, Belfast; AIB Bank and in numerous private collections.
