The Hugh Lane Gallery’s Make and Be programme is one that particularly welcomes international participants and encourages participants to speak in the language that they feel most comfortable with.
Make and Be is our cultural mediation multi-lingual programme. It is one that particularly welcomes international participants and encourages participants to speak in the language that they feel most comfortable with. Within this education project, we hope to encourage families from international communities within the DCC area to develop a relationship with the Hugh Lane Gallery and our programmes.
***Our Education and Community outreach programmes will be taking place entirely off-site in locations throughout the city during our refurbishment period***
Our current iteration (September, 2025) is with Bríd Higgins Ní Chinnéide, with a programme that is in Irish and English.
Between 9 May – 13 June, Romanian artist Anca Danila again welcomed the Romanian Community to the gallery.
Prior to this, (17 January- 21 February 2025) we invited families to come and work with artist Taim Haimet, particularly Arabic speaking families. The programme explored Arabic culture, language and artists from the Arab world.
From September-October 2024 we collaborated with artist Olga Vnukova with the Ukrainian community. In November 2024, we again worked with Bríd Higgins Ní Chinnéide, for a programme that is in Irish and English.
From 12 April – 17 May 2024 the programme involved 6 weeks of zine-making for families with an African background with zine-maker, writer and storyteller Victory Nwabu-Ekeoma and artist Rema Hamid.
From October 2023-January 2024 the programme was in Irish and led by artist Bríd Higgins Ní Chinnéide.
In Spring 2023 the iteration of this project ran on Friday afternoons from February to June 2023 was facilitated by artist Olga Vnukova, with assistance from artist Olga Khomiak who both speak Ukrainian and English.
The first iteration of ‘Make and Be’ was in partnership with social enterprise Mother Tongues and ran from April to June 2022, and was facilitated by artist Nasrin Golden, who speaks English and Farsi. The second iteration ran from September to December 2022, and was facilitated by artist Anca Danila who worked with the Romanian community.
May-June 2025; Over the course of six art workshops, Anca Danila and the group explored a range of artistic techniques including acrylic painting, drawing, monoprinting, and the creation of projected compositions using acetate and cellophane paper.
During the six weeks with artist Anca Danila, she and the group from the Romanian community drew inspiration from a range of artworks displayed in the gallery, including:

• Various portraits displayed in the gallery
