Join us for a talk with artist Taïm Haimet – a visual artist based in Galway.
Born in France of Syrian parents, her work explores the inheritance of a Middle Eastern identity deeply intertwined with a history of colonialism, continuous war and loss. The question of where we place the notion ‘Sacred’ on what is lost, or on what is left _individually or collectively_ is at the heart of her research.
Drawing from Arab folklore, poetry and mysticism, she imagines ‘sacred spaces’ where these narratives can be honored symbolically and resonate with the contemporary world. Coming from a theatre background (Conservatoire Charles Munch in Paris 2006-2009) her practice borrows from theatrical codes in the staging of space and narrative, and the importance given to the human voice as a medium in and of itself. Her work stems from family stories, personal experiences and encounters, which develop into frameworks of narrative-based installations expressed through sculpture, video and sound.
She directed art workshops with That’s Life ( Galway Brothers of Charity 2022/2023), read personal writings at the Town Hall Theatre, Galway (Black Gate invitation, October 2022) and worked with MACNAS as part of the COLLIDE internship. She completed an Honours degree in Contemporary Art in 2023 and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Creative practice at the ATU, Galway. She has won the 126 Gallery artist residency award 2023 and the 2023 RDS Visual Arts Awards.

Curated by Basic Space in partnership with Hugh Lane Gallery, BASIC TALKS is a platform for lectures, workshops, presentations, and performances. Speakers include artists, curators, writers, and critics who will generate discourse on producing, framing and exhibiting art. BASIC TALKS is a collaboration between Basic Space and the Hugh Lane Gallery, exploring alternatives in the dissemination of contemporary art and its discourses.
