The Municipal Gallery Revisited by WB Yeats

Tuesday  15 July 2025, 2:30pm

Lecturer Yseult O’Driscoll explores the works featured in WB Yeats’ famous poem The Municipal Gallery Revisited. The talk will explore the importance of these paintings as a memorial to the Cultural Revival movement in Ireland early in the 20th Century, as well as links to Sarah Purser and the establishment of the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in 1908. The poem in question recalls a visit the poet took to the gallery and the paintings he saw there, many depicting figures who he was close with and who he knew. This talk will discuss the poet’s experience of nostalgia in the text for the people he’s lost and the culture he has witnessed wither away by means of highlighting the artwork mentioned throughout the poem.

Free, advance booking required.
