EachOther Project

EachOther is an Education and Community Outreach project by visual artist Liliane Puthod with St Laurence O’Toole’s Specialist School.

***Our Education and Community outreach programmes are taking place entirely off-site in locations throughout the city during our refurbishment period***

EachOther is an Education and Community Outreach project by visual artist Liliane Puthod with St Laurence O’Toole’s Specialist School.

During the project, Liliane worked together with the students to ‘revamp’ one of their prefab school’s meeting rooms. The space is used for one-on-one meetings with Dave, a youth worker at the school. The aim was to work alongside the students through the ‘design committee’ to brainstorm ideas and be inspired to physically transform Dave’s room into a room of their own.

The students were encouraged to critically engage with their neighbourhood and with concepts of value and waste through second-hand shopping and recycling. The production of hand made objects inspired by direct surroundings in contrast with nowadays mass-produced and online bought items was also promoted during these workshops.

The project was developed in conjunction with City Connects, a pilot government programme in the North East Inner City (NEIC) area. The aim of City Connects is to ensure that each and every student receives all the services and resources they need in order to succeed and thrive.

This project by visual artist Liliane Puthod is co-curated with Jessica O’Donnell, Head of Education and Community Outreach, Tori Boccarossa, Schools Coordinator, and Cleo Fagan, Education Curator.

  • Planning

During the early stages of the project, artist Liliane Puthod met with the students, showing examples of her own artwork and sharing her practice. Then it was time to get to planning for the redesign of Dave’s room.

The group discussed the colour that they wanted to paint the room and a dark blue with some light blue was a consensus between everyone. They also spoke about painting a green screen. Bean bags were agreed on, as was a mini fridge.

Mood boards and design ideas were explored. These developed with the project as the final revamp came together.

  • Painting

A deep blue was decided on as the perfect colour for the space. The students got to painting with help from Liliane who had the colour mixed at the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun. Rediscover Paint, a social enterprise that collects unwanted paint from recycling centres and reuses it to create new colours, ensured that the project stuck to its aim of highlighting the concepts of value and waste.

Once dried, the group revisited the idea of using green-screen paint. It was decided that an ‘8 ball’ design would be painted on the wall in this colour. This section of the wall can be used as a green-screen in the making of videos!

  • Portraying

During March, workshops were held to create portraits of Dave, the school’s youth worker. These portraits were painted with ink and framed using second hand frames. Leaving the portraits to dry, work was begun on finalising a design for a neon sign, made by Dublin Neon.

The design of the neon was important as the sign will travel with the school during a future move to a new building!

  • Displaying

The final phase of the project was to add some last touches. Notice boards, lava lamps and bean bags tied everything together.

The last thing to do will be to officially launch the project, welcoming the students, teachers and others in to see the final design!
