Dublin’s Stained Glass with Dr David Caron
Dr David Caron’s lecture, Dublin’s Stained Glass, will feature a chronological selection of the finest twentieth-century stained glass to be found in the city centre, northside suburbs, and north county Dublin. Artists included are Harry Clarke and Evie Hone, along with many examples by less well-known artists and studios. David’s lecture will reveals the changing styles, mores, and subject choices for windows that evolved over the course of the century; these were in part determined by artistic and architectural movements but also by seismic events such as the First World War and Vatican II.
About the speaker
David Caron’s PhD research at Trinity College focused on Michael Healy and the stained glass artists of An Túr Gloine (Tower of Glass), Dublin’s highly regarded stained glass studio. He was one of the three original compilers of the Gazetteer of Irish Stained Glass in 1988, and was editor and principal author of the revised and expanded edition in 2021. Four Courts Press published his monograph, Michael Healy, 1873-1941: An Túr Gloine’s Stained Glass Pioneer in 2023, and Dublin’s Stained Glass – a Guide to the Finest Twentieth-Century Windows in 2025. David regularly contributes articles on stained glass to the Irish Arts Review.
